Santi Cazorla double helps Villarreal hold Real Madrid in La Liga
Santi Cazorla scored twice as struggling Villarreal rallied to rescue a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in La Liga action on Thursday.
First-half goals from Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane eclipsed Cazorla’s opener, but the former Arsenal man added another late on to secure the point.
Cazorla needed only four minutes to put the hosts ahead — the midfielder wonderfully curling his right-footed shot around and past Thibaut Courtois at the far post.
Real struck back just three minutes later through Benzema, who headed home Lucas Vazquez’s cross from inside the box.
Varane added a second in the 20th minute with a header of his own from a Toni Kroos cross following a set piece.
However, Villarreal found their equaliser eight minutes from time with Cazorla again providing the final touch, this time with his head after a Pablo Fornals pass.
The draw keeps Real in fourth place in the table. Villarreal jumped to 17th with the point.
